Scrum is the first step into the Agile world
Scrum is one of the Agile methodologies. It’s a good first step into the Agile world.
This article is a part of my Scrum series, see with free links (including to this article):
I like Scrum. The good Scrum.

There are several definitions for the Agile world and methodologies, but none of them is valid for all of them, because it’s impossible. The Agile world is too flexible to define it in a simple way.
If a company would like to introduce an Agile methodology, the best option is Scrum, because it’s well defined and widely known. After a while, when the teams understand the concepts and psychology of Scrum, the organization can be changed to follow another Agile way.
I worked in several Scrum and Agile teams. After a while, the Scrum improvements became smaller and less significant, because the external dependencies (organizations) didn’t follow the Scrum or Agile way. But the change is hard in other organizations and Scrum team members cannot do it. Scrum team members can only notice the expectation to the management through the Scrum Master.
If the organization must be changed, there is a good book for the managers: The Fifth Discipline. My experience is, more HR people know this book (or at least heard about) than managers — Unfortunately.
